Bundled Payment for OA Surgery Means More Emergency Department Visits

Key clinical point: Shorter hospital stays for knee- or hip-replacement surgery were associated with more emergency department visits.

Major finding: After payment for osteoarthritis surgery was bundled in Ontario during a recent 12-year period, rehospitalization rates modestly declined but emergency department visits within 30 days post discharge climbed by 62%.

Study details: This was a retrospective look at all orthopedic surgeries performed for osteoarthritis in Ontario during 2004-2016.
