IBD Linked to Small Bowel Cancer

Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol; 2017 Dec; Bojesen, et al

Crohn’s disease increases the risk of small bowel cancer, according to a recent nationwide analysis. The study, which included the entire population aged ≥16 years from 1978 to 2010, found most patients who had developed inflammatory bowel disease-related small bowel carcinoma (IBD-SBC) had moderate to severe IBD.

  • The analysis found 40 cases of IBD-SBC in the population, which included 241,620 person-years of follow-up.
  • 23 patients with Crohn’s disease had developed small bowel adenocarcinoma.
  • Conversely, the risk of small bowel cancer was not detected among patients with ulcerative colitis.
