Clinical Course of IBD with Celiac Disease

J Crohns Colitis; ePub 2018 May 7; Tse, et al

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), principally those with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and with concomitant celiac disease, have unique phenotypic features compared to non-celiac IBD, with higher risks for colitis-related hospitalizations, extensive colitis, and primary sclerosing cholangitis. This according to a retrospective match case-control study of adults with coexistent IBD and celiac disease. Researchers found:

  • 342 patients with IBD were included.
  • 114 patients had coexistent celiac disease and 228 did not.
  • Those with coexistent IDB and celiac disease had higher rates of primary sclerosing cholangitis, extensive ulcerative colitis, and family history of celiac disease compared to patients without concomitant celiac disease.
