Appetite and Disordered Eating in Crohn’s Disease

J Crohns Colitis; ePub 2018 Apr 3; Wardle, et al

In patients with active Crohn’s disease (CD), reduced protein consumption and more prevalent disordered eating behavior traits are present, a recent study found. Researchers matched CD patients with healthy volunteers (HV). They found:

  • 30 CD (median age 32.3 years, BMI 24.9) and 31 matched HV patients (median age 32.8 years, BMI 24.7) were included.
  • There were not significant differences in calorific intake between groups.
  • Protein intake was lower in the CD group.
  • Greater binge eating and decreased control of cravings may be attributed to lower mood and higher anxiety.
  • Patients may benefit from stronger psychological support with firm dietetic advice for healthy eating.
