Frequent hypoglycemic episodes raise cardiac event risk

Key clinical point: Frequent hypoglycemic episodes (versus less frequent episodes) were linked to a higher incidence of cardiovascular events in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Major finding: The risk of cardiovascular events was significantly increased in those with more than five hypoglycemic episodes in a year, compared with those with one to five episodes (odds ratio, 1.61; 95% confidence interval, 1.56-1.66).

Study details: This was a retrospective analysis of 4.9 million adults with type 2 diabetes from a large U.S. commercial medical database.

Disclosures: Dr. Rajpal reported that he had no conflicts of interest related to the research.
