How Crime-Ridden Areas Impact Obesity Levels

Obesity; ePub 2017 Oct 31; Powell-Wiley, et al

Crime is likely to impede leisure-time physical activity in resource-limited areas, according to a recent analysis. Investigators developed a model representing resource-limited Washington, DC communities and people who live in them. They simulated the impact of crime on leisure-time physical activity and obesity among black women. Among the results:

  • Black women had a 25% probability of exercising.
  • Reducing crime and making more areas exercise-accessible decreased the rise in obesity prevalence by 2.69%.
  • Increasing the probability of black women to exercise to 38% further decreased the rise in obesity prevalence by nearly 3%.
