Which Children Fail to Respond to MRSA Treatment?
Pediatrics; ePub 2017 Jun 1; Hamdy, et al
Nearly a third of children with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia fail to respond to treatment, according to multicenter retrospective study of children 18 years of age or younger. Details of the study include the following:
- There were 232 reported cases of MRSA in the studied cohort, 72 of which failed to respond to treatment (31%).
- Among the 232 patients, 23% developed complications and 5 died within 30 days.
- Among 174 children who received vancomycin, catheter-related infections were linked to lower odds of failed treatment.
- The same analysis found endovascular infections were associated with a greater likelihood of treatment failure.
