QOL and Characterization of Patients With Atopic Dermatitis

A negative impact was observed on quality of life (QOL) in patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) in Portugal, according to a new study. The cross-sectional study included patients with AD and other eczemas. Researchers found:

  • 162 participants aged 0.5 to 74 years were included.
  • 37.7% of patients with AD consider their disease as disabling and >50% feel stigmatized by society.
  • The mean Skindex score for AD was 39.68, and 44% of patients presented a severe QOL impact.
  • Moderate to severe AD patients accounted for 87% of the study sample.
  • Factors influencing worse QOL in AD included increasing age, with the Skindex score likely to increase.
