Depression in MS Patients

Evaluating prevalence of therapy

A large proportion of patients with MS and depression are now receiving treatment, a change from previous reports, according to a survey of 152 patients with MS. Researchers found:

• 65% of patients with major depression were taking antidepressants.

• With adjustment for successful treatment, the prevalence of treated depression rose to 85.7%.

• Of those receiving treatment for depression, 19% were receiving nonpharmacological treatment alone, 38% were taking antidepressant drugs only, and 44% were receiving pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments.

• Demographic and clinical variables were not statistically significantly associated with antidepressant drug use in patients with MS and depression.
