PPI users show no increased risk of dementia

Key clinical point: Use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) was not associated with an increased risk of dementia and was associated with a 30% reduction in risk compared to no PPI use (adjusted hazard ratio 0.67).

Major finding: In a multivariate analysis, the incidence of dementia was 11.4% among PPI users and 12.3% among individuals not exposed to PPIs over an average follow-up period of 13 years.

Study details: The data come from a population-based study of 183,968 adults aged 55 years and older using the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank, Wales, United Kingdom, from 1999 to 2015.
