Predicting Survival After PHC

A new nomogram versus the AJCC staging system

Researchers have developed and validated a nomogram to predict disease-specific survival (DSS) after curative intent resection of perihelar cholangiocarcinoma (PHC). Their nomogram was developed from 173 US patients, externally validated in 133 patients in The Netherlands, and had better prognostic accuracy than the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system. Researchers found:

  • Lymph node involvement, resection margin status, and tumor differentiation were independent prognostic factors in the US derivation cohort.

  • A nomogram with these factors had a concordance index of 0.73 vs 0.66 for the AJCC staging system.

  • In the validation cohort, the nomogram had a concordance index of 0.72 vs 0.60 for the AJCC staging system.
