Citrus Consumption in Melanoma
Does it increase risk?
Citrus consumption was associated with an increased risk of malignant melanoma, according to studies of 63,810 women and 41,622 men. Researchers followed the 2 cohorts for 24 and 26 years, respectively, and found:
- Incident melanomas occurred in 1,840 people.
- After adjusting for other risk factors, hazard ratios for melanoma were:
- 1.00 for twice per week citrus consumption (reference)
- 1.10 for 2 to 4 times per week
- 1.26 for 5 to 6 times per week
- 1.27 for 1 to 1.5 times per day
- 1.36 for ≥ 1.6 times per day
- Grapefruit showed a hazard ratio of 1.41 associated with consumption ≥ 3 times per week vs never.
