Impact of Statins on Multiple Myeloma

J Clin Oncol; ePub 2016 Sep 19; Sanfilippo, et al

Statins were linked with reduced mortality risk in a cohort study involving nearly 5,000 US veterans with multiple myeloma.

Investigators looked at data of participants who were diagnosed with the disorder between 1999 and 2013. Among the results:

• Nearly 2,300 received statin therapy.

• Statin use was linked with a 21% decrease in all-cause mortality, and a 24% decrease in disease-specific mortality.

• Statin use was also linked with a 31% decreased risk of developing a skeletal-related event.
