Impact of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome in CRC

J Clin Oncol; ePub 2016 Sep 6; Feliciano, et al

Patients with early-stage colorectal cancer (CRC) who are obese and have metabolic syndrome have worse overall and CRC-related survival, according to a study involving nearly 2,500 individuals.

Investigators grouped participants based on presence or absence of metabolic syndrome, as well as obesity. Among the results:

• 601 patients died, 325 from CRC at a median follow-up of 6 years.

• Obese participants with metabolic syndrome had a 45% higher mortality risk than nonobese patients without metabolic syndrome.

• The risk was 9% higher for those who were not obese but had metabolic syndrome.

• Obese patients who did not have metabolic syndrome did not have a higher mortality risk.

• Those with obesity and metabolic syndrome had a 49% higher risk of CRC-related death; these odds increased with the number of metabolic syndrome components present.
