Immune Response & Obesity-Related Colorectal Cancer

Int J Cancer; ePub 2016 Mar 31; Hanyuda, et al

A vigorous immune response does not particularly hinder obesity-related cancer, according to a study of 1,798,029 men and women, including 1,436 incident rectal and colon cancer cases with available tumor tissue and pathological immunity data. Researchers found:

• Body mass index (BMI) was significantly associated with higher risk of overall colorectal cancer.

• The association of BMI with colorectal carcinoma risk did not significantly differ by the level of lymphocytic reaction or T-cell infiltration in tumor tissue status.

• A vigorous immune response does not particularly hinder obesity-related cancer.

• Being obese increases risk of colorectal cancer, and a vigorous T-cell response can improve colorectal cancer prognosis.
