Does Weight Gain Impact BC Disease Recurrence?
Clin Breast Cancer; ePub 2017 Nov 8; Raghavendra, et al
Although premenopausal women with breast cancer were at higher risk of weight gain after 5 years of endocrine therapy, those who gained >5% were not more apt to experience disease recurrence, according to a retrospective study involving nearly 1,300 individuals. Participants had been diagnosed with stage I-III, HR-positive, HER2-negative BC over a ~10-year period ending in 2008, had 5 years of endocrine therapy, and were relapse-free ≥5 years post-diagnosis. Investigators looked at the impact of significant weight change. Among the results:
- ~One-third had weight gain >5%.
- Women who were premenopausal at diagnosis were 40% more likely than postmenopausal women to experience significant weight increase.
- Asian women were least likely to gain weight.
- Risk of recurrence was similar in patients who gained significant weight and those who did not.
