These Levels Rise Over Time in Some with VWD

Am J Hematol; ePub 2017 Nov 17; Abou-Ismail, et al

A significant rise in von Willebrand factor antigen (VWF:Ag), VWF activity (VWF:RCo), and Factor VIII (FVIII) levels were seen over time in a retrospective cohort study involving 126 individuals with a certain type of von Willebrand disease (VWD) or low VWF. Investigators looked at VWF:Ag, VWF:RCo, and FVIII levels in participants with either type 1 VWD or low VWF. Among the results:

  • Overall, over ~10 years, 28% attained normal levels of both VWF:Ag and VWF:RCo.
  • 2 in every 10 patients with VWD achieved such.
  • 3 in every 10 with low VWF did so.
  • Statistically significant positive trends of VWF:Ag, VWF:RCo, and FVIII were seen over time (2.4, 1.4, and 1.4 U dL-1/year, respectively).

The authors noted that they were unable to determine if the bleeding phenotype also improves.
