Transfusion After Arthroplasty in Hemophilia

J Arthroplasty; ePub Jan 21; Kapadia, Boylan

Hemophilia is associated with an increased risk of blood transfusion after lower extremity total joint arthroplasty (TJA), according to a study of 332 patients with hemophilia who underwent TJA and a comparison cohort of 996 patients without hemophilia. Researchers found:

• Incidence of any postoperative transfusion 15.06% in patients with hemophilia vs 9.84% in controls.

• For patients with hemophilia, the odds ratios vs controls were 1.60 for any transfusion, 1.90 for allogenic transfusion, and 1.05 for autogenic transfusion.
