Diabetes Risk in These Patients with Pancreatitis

Am J Gastroenterol; ePub 2017 Jul 25; Bellin, et al

Patients with chronic pancreatitis are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if they also have exocrine deficiency, pancreatic calcifications, and have had pancreatic surgery, according to the North American Pancreatitis 2 studies, which included over 1,000 patients. Additional details of the investigation include the following:

  • Traditional risk factors for type 2 diabetes, including obesity and a family history of the disease, were also risk factors for patients with chronic pancreatitis.
  • The strongest predictor of diabetes mellitus in the multicenter cohort was obesity, which almost tripled the likelihood of developing the disease (OR, 2.8).
