Celiac Patients Can Safely Add Oats to the Menu

Gastroenterology; 2017 Aug; Pinto-Sánchez, et al

Advising patients with celiac disease to avoid oats is unneccessary, according to evidence in a recent systematic review and meta-analysis. Details include the following:

  • The analysis, which included 26 studies and 6 randomized controlled trials, found that 12 months of oat consumption did not worsen patients’ symptoms.
  • Oats had no impact on histology, intraepithelial lymphocyte count, or serologic tests.
  • Researchers were also unable to find any differences between children and adults in their response to oats.
