Ulcerative Colitis, Crohn’s Don’t Impact Birth Outcomes
Am J Gastroenterol; 2017 Nov; Martin, et al
Neither ulcerative colitis (UC) nor Crohn’s disease (CD) affect a man’s paternity rate or the birth outcomes of his female partner, according to an analysis of the Utah Population Database. Among the findings:
- UC and CD affect about 350,000 men of reproductive age.
- The Utah Population Database includes 1,245 male patients with CD and 1,368 with UC, who were compared to their male siblings as controls.
- 66% of UC patients with at least 1 brother had offspring, compared to 61% in the siblings (P= 0.16)
- Birth outcomes did not differ either, e.g., the rate of congenital malformations was the same in both groups.
- Among CD patients with a least 1 brother, 58% had offspring, vs 57% in controls.
