Hyaluronan May Hold Promise for IBD

J Histochem Cytochem; ePub 2017 Dec 1; Kessler et al.

Hyaluronan has therapeutic potential to help protect patients from bacterially induced colitis, suggests a new study. Details include:

  • Human-milk derived hyaluronan has antimicrobial properties that have been shown to protect against Salmonella Typhimurium infection of epithelial cells.
  • Researchers found that 35 kilodalton hyaluronan (HA35) also has antimicrobial properties, expresses beta-defensin, and disrupts murine Citrobacter rodentium infection.
  • HA35 has also been shown to destroy murine Salmonella Typhimurium infection and downregulate leaky junction protein claudin-2 expression.
