Constipation-Related IBS Similar to Other IBS Types

Am J Gastroenterol; 2017 Jun; Peters, et al

The intestinal barrier and secretory functions of patients with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) do not seem to differ from those observed in healthy adults, according to researchers who tested a variety of intestinal functions in 19 IBS-C patients and compared them to normal persons. Among their findings:

  • Radioactive mannitol excretion, which measures saccharide excretion, did not differ significantly between the 2 groups.
  • There were also no significant differences in transmucosal resistance, a measure of the duodenal and colonic mucosal barriers.
  • The researchers did find laboratory evidence to suggest that basal duodenal secretion is decreased in patients with IBS-C.
