Comparing Endoscopic Indices in Crohn’s Disease

Am J Gastroenterol; 2017 Oct; Khanna, et al

The Crohn’s Disease Endoscopic Index of Severity (CDEIS) and the Simple Endoscopic Score for Crohn’s Disease (SES-CD) are both valid ways to evaluate disease activity in patients with the disorder and are moderately responsive to changes in endoscopically measured disease activity. But a recent comparison of the 2 metrics concluded that SES-CD generates a numerically greater response. Among the findings:

  • Researchers used video recordings of colonoscopies at baseline and at week 8-12 for their analysis, which was part of a clinical trial of adalimumab therapy.
  • The effect size and Guyatt’s Responsiveness statistic (GRS) estimates for SES-CD based on the change in patient reported outcome (PRO2) of 50 points or more were 0.76 and 0.93.
  • Effect size and GRS estimates for CDEIS were 0.70 and 0.83.
