These Patients Are Likely to be Unaware of Their Diabetes
Diabetes Care; ePub 2017 Mar 13; Menke, et al
More than one-third of people with diabetes were either undiagnosed or unaware they had the condition, according a study involving nearly 1,900 individuals.
Participants—from 2011–2014 NHANES—had either diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes. Investigators looked at the link between certain characteristics and awareness of having diabetes. Among the results:
- Patients aged 45 to 64 years of age were 34% less likely to be unaware of their diabetes than 20- to 44-year-olds.
- Asians were 75% more likely to be unaware than whites; Hispanics of non–Mexican-American descent were 69% more likely.
- After adjusting for certain variables, people with a family history of diabetes were 50% less likely to be unaware; those who were hospitalized in the past year were 33% less likely.
- Those who did not receive health care in the past year were 6 times more likely to be unaware.
