Predicting Prediabetes in Certain Obese Youths
Clin Diabetes; ePub 2017 Feb 8; Khokhar, et al
Measuring only A1C does not adequately predict prediabetes in certain young people, according to a retrospective chart review involving 230 children.
Investigators compared how various tests performed against the oral glucose tolerance test in predicting prediabetes in overweight and obese African-American and Caribbean children. Among the results:
- A1C alone had low sensitivity (70%) and specificity (49%).
- BMIz score, A1C, and HOMA significantly predicted prediabetes.
- Better discrimination was seen when these measures were used together.
