Atopic Dermatitis Associated with Less Activity

J Invest Dermatol; ePub 2016 May 14; Silverberg, et al

Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) exhibited less vigorous physical activity and less activity overall, a recent study found. Researchers noted that this could put these patients at risk for other comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease and obesity. Physical activity questionnaires and 7-day actigraphy data were obtained from 3,252 adults from the 2005 to 2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Researchers found:

• Adults with AD (n=344) had significantly lower average total daily activity and moderate/vigorous physical activity in multivariate models.

• These differences remained significant in models that controlled for sleep disturbance, comorbid asthma, and depression.

• There was no association with sedentary time or light physical activity.
