Do Clindamycin Gel and Makeup Work Together?

Compatibility in women with acne assessed

Clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide 3.75% gel demonstrated cosmetic compatibility with facial foundation in a randomized, observer-blind split-face trial involving 29 females. The subjects applied makeup after random application of the study drug to one side of their face.

Investigators and the participants looked at skin attributes, tolerability, and cosmetic compatibility right after application and again 6 hours later. They also assessed cutaneous tolerability.

No differences were seen between groups with regards to coverage, blotchiness, appearance, skin tone, and visual smoothness. Additionally, there was no erythema, edema, dryness, or peeling after application of makeup.

The authors concluded the drug is compatible with cosmetics and thus can be used in this manner by individuals with acne.
