CVD Risk Factors in Patients with HS
Are HS patients at greater risk for CVD?
Cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity and smoking appear at a significantly higher rate in patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) compared to controls, according to a study of 6,174 HS patients and 24,993 controls. Details of the study included:
• Significant association of HS with obesity (OR 3.45), central obesity (OR 2.97), active smoking (OR 4.34), history of smoking (OR 6.34), hypertriglyceridemia (OR 1.67), low HDL (OR 2.48), diabetes (OR 2.85), and metabolic syndrome (OR 2.22) was detected.
• Associations were significant both in population and hospital HS patients, with hospital HS groups having higher OR than the population HS groups.
• The need for screening of patients with HS for modifiable cardiovascular risks.
