Is there a racial association?

Incidence of all-cause end-stage renal disease (ESRD) among patients with a recent diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is high in Georgia, according to a study of 344 patients newly diagnosed with SLE and living in Atlanta, Georgia. Researchers found:

• Among the 344 patients with SLE, 29 initiated ESRD over 2,603.8 years of follow-up.

• Incidence rate was 13.8 among black patients vs 3.3% among white patients.

• Lupus nephritis was the strongest risk factor for incident ESRD.

• atients who were black or age < 18 years at diagnosis may be more likely to progress to ESRD.

• Incidence did not differ by sex or other characteristics.
