Incident Gout in Sleep Apnea

Assessing the risk

Sleep apnea is independently associated with an increased risk of incident gout, according to a study of 9,865 patients with newly diagnosed sleep apnea and 43,598 comparators. Researchers found:

• 270 incident cases of gout were identified during 1 year of follow-up.

• Incidence of gout among patients with apnea was 8.4/1,000; among comparators incidence was 4.8/1,000.

• Crude and multivariate rate ratios of incident gout for sleep apnea were 1.7 and 1.5, respectively.

• Corresponding rate differences were 3.6 and 2.8 per 1,000 person/years.

• The effect of sleep apnea persisted across subgroups.
