Biologics Don’t Affect Infants’ Response to Vaccines
Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol; 2018 Jan; Beaulieu, et al
Infants who are exposed to biologic therapy in utero seem to respond normally to vaccination, according to a review of medical records of women who were treated for inflammatory bowel disease with the drugs.
- 179 women in the Pregnancy in IBD and Neonatal Outcomes registry completed a vaccine survey.
- Serum samples from infants who were at least 7 months old were collected for titers to antibodies against Haemophilus influenzae B and tetanus.
- When investigators compared women who had been exposed to biologic drugs to those who were not, they found no differences in the proportion of infants who developed antibodies against Haemophilus influenzae B.
- A comparison of antibodies against tetanus toxoid likewise found similar protection among exposed and unexposed mothers.
