Patterns of Pediatric Hospital Care Are Shifting

JAMA Pediatr; ePub 2017 Jul 10; Franca, et al

Children with common disorders are receiving more of their care in hospitals rather than in a community setting, according to an analysis of Massachusetts patients between 2004 and 2014. The same analysis also found patterns of pediatric hospital care have changed significantly over the years. Details of the analysis include the following:

  • The care of adults and children has become more concentrated among hospitals in the state, but that concentration has been greater among children, who are now more likely to be treated at academic rather than nonacademic centers.
  • Children are being transferred from one hospital to another more often, increasing by 36.2%.
  • The likelihood of a child having all their care in only one hospital has dropped by 65%.
