Organ Transplants Carry Risk of Several Cancers
Pediatrics; 2017 May; Yanik, et al
Children who receive organ transplants are far more likely to develop many types of cancer, according to a US transplant registry that was linked to 16 cancer registries. The investigation revealed the following results:
- 392 cancers were diagnosed among nearly 18,000 children who had received solid organ transplantation.
- The standardized incidence ratio (SIR) for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma was significantly increased when compared to the general public.
- Other cancers that occurred more frequently among transplant recipients included leukemia, myeloma, and cancers of the liver, ovaries, and testes.
