AOM in the Postpneumococcal Vaccine Age

Pediatrics; ePub 2017 Sep 1; Kaur, et al

Since the pneumococcal conjugate vaccines 7 and 13 were released, the epidemiology of acute otitis media (AOM) has changed significantly, but the risk factors for the infection have not, according to an analysis of 615 children who had been managed from 2006 to 2016. Details of the analysis include the following:

  • 23% of children had a least one AOM episode by age 1 year.
  • 60% of children experienced at least 1 AOM episode by age 3 years.
  • The greatest number of infections occurred from ages 6 to 12 months.
  • Risk factors for AOM included male sex, non-Hispanic white race, a family history of recurrent AOM, day care attendance, and early development of an AOM episode.
