AAP Issues 2017 Preventive Health Recommendations
Pediatrics; 2017 Feb 17; Am Acad Ped, et al
The American Academy of Pediatrics has approved a new set of guidelines for preventive health care. The new recommendations are a consensus reached between AAP and the Bright Futures Periodicity Schedule Workgroup. Recognizing that each child is an individual, the guidelines assume that children are already receiving good parenting, don’t have any important health problems that need to be addressed, and are growing and developing normally. Assuming these needs have been addressed, the 2017 recommendations address a wide array of issues in the Periodicity Schedule. The changes implemented in 2017 schedule include numerous footnote revisions:
- Children should be screened once with audiometry during the ages of 11-14, 15-17, and 18-21 years and including 6,000 and 8,000 Hg frequencies.
- Psychosocial and behavioral assessment should be family centered and may include a child’s social emotional health and caregiver depression.
- Bilirubin screening at the first newborn visit has been added to the recommendations.
