Understanding the Decline in Teenage Binge Drinking
Pediatrics; ePub 2017 Jun 1; Jang, et al
Binge drinking among US adolescents has been declining in recent years; an analysis of 8th, 10th, and 12th grade students found the decline is partially related to birth cohorts, with reductions being the greatest in teens born from 1985 to 1990. Additional findings include:
- Slower reductions were observed among African American teens since 2007, when compared to whites.
- The gap among teens in varying socioeconomic groups is growing.
- The difference between males and females, on the other hand, is narrowing.
- Binge drinking was defined as consuming ≥5 alcoholic drinks in a row on 2 or more occasions during the previous 2 weeks.
