AAP Update on Adolescent Acute Sexual Assault

Pediatrics; ePub 2017 Mar; Crawford-Jakubiak, et al

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently updated its policy statement on caring for teens who have been victims of acute sexual assault. Among the clinical guidelines for pediatricians are the following:

  • Routinely ask teenagers if there has been a history of sexual violence, violence while dating, or sexual assaults. Don’t overlook adolescents with disabilities.
  • Stay up to date on reporting requirements as they pertain to sexual assaults, including state laws that guarantee a teenager’s right to obtain medical care at sexual assault and rape crisis centers.
  • Stay informed regarding community resources that are available to respond to assaults and rape.
  • Know where patients can be referred for forensic medical examinations.
  • Become familiar with the CDC guidelines in how to care for teens who have survived an assault.
