Elderly patients undergoing robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery had similar post-operative complication rates as younger patients and almost half of elderly patients were safely discharged the same day of surgery, a recent study found. The retrospective cohort study included all patients who underwent robotic-assisted gynecologic surgery at a high volume, single institution from January 2013 to May 2016. Demographic information, discharge timing, and peri- and post-operative outcomes were compared for patients aged <65 years to those aged ≥65 years using univariate and multivariate analyses. Researchers found:

• There were 2,757 patients included in the study; 2,521 aged <65 years and 236 aged ≥65 years.
• Elderly patients were more likely to have pre-operative risk factors and more surgically complex procedures.
• Same day discharge was more common in younger patients.
• Analysis of post-operative outcomes included 2,023 patients.
• There were no differences between elderly and younger patients in overall post-operative complications, reoperations, ICU admission, emergency room visits, or hospital readmissions with 6 weeks of surgery.
