Is Vaginal Mesh Removal Surgery Safe?
Female Pelvic Med Reconstr Surg; ePub 2017 Apr 20; Cardenas-Trowers, et al
Vaginal mesh removal surgery is safe; however, some patients require more than 1 procedure for which the risk factors are uncertain, a recent study found. A retrospective case series of 83 patients underwent vaginal mesh removal from 2008 to 2015. Researchers found:
- Median time interval from initial mesh placement to removal was 58 months.
- The most common preoperative symptoms were vaginal pain, dyspareunia, and pelvic pain.
- In follow-up 4 to 6 weeks postoperative, the most common symptoms were urinary incontinence, vaginal pain, buttock pain, and urinary tract infection.
- After vaginal mesh removal, 29 patients required 1 or more reoperations; >1 procedure was performed in 49% of reoperations.
