Risk of Repeat SUI and POP Surgery

Obstet Gynecol; ePub 2017 May 5; Wu, Dieter, et al

The 5-year risk of undergoing repeat stress urinary incontinence (SUI) or pelvic organ prolapse (POP) surgery was less than 10%, a recent study found, with higher risks for women aged ≥65 years and for those who underwent an initial POP surgery. The retrospective cohort study included women aged 18 to 84 years from 2007 to 2014 and defined 3 groups based on the index procedure: 1) SUI surgery only; 2) POP surgery only; and 3) both SUI+POP surgery. The occurrence of a subsequent SUI or POP procedure over time was assessed for women aged <65 years and those aged ≥65 years with a median follow-up of 2 years. Researchers found:

  • 138,003 index procedures were identified.
  • Overall cumulative incidence of a subsequent SUI or POP surgery within 5 years after any index procedure was 7.8% for women aged <65 years and 9.9% for women aged ≥65 years.
  • Cumulative incidence was lower if the initial surgery was SUI only and higher if an initial POP procedure was performed.
