Depression linked to persistent opioid use after hysterectomy
Key clinical point: Depressed patients may represent a vulnerable population in terms of persistent opioid use.
Major finding: Women with preoperative depression were at a slightly greater risk for perioperative opioid use (risk ratio, 1.08), but a greater risk for persistent postoperative opioid use (11% vs. 8%; RR, 1.43).
Study details: A retrospective analysis of 382,078 hysterectomies performed between 2001 and 2015.
