More than 80% of women initiating an intrauterine device (IUD) or contraceptive implant prior to hospital discharge continued use at 6 months postpartum, a recent study found. This analysis examined in-hospital provision, expulsion, and 6-month continuation of immediate postpartum copper T380 IUDs (Cu IUD), levonorgestrel (LNG) IUDs, and contraceptive implants from October 2013 to February 2016 among 638 patients who requested a postpartum IUD or implant, and 350 patients enrolled in prospective follow-up prior to hospital discharge. Researchers found:

• 325 (93%) women received their preferred contraceptive device prior to hospital discharge: 27% Cu IUD users, 38% LNG IUD users, and 35% implant users.
• At 6 months postpartum, 289/325 (89%) device recipients completed follow-up.
• There was no statistically significant difference in expulsions by delivery type or continuation by device type.
• 6-month device continuation was ≥80% for all device types.
