Beginning estrogen soon after menopause slows atherosclerosis progression
Key clinical point: Waiting more than a decade after menopause to begin estrogen therapy did not provide heart-health benefits.
Major finding: Oral estrogen therapy taken within 6 years after the onset of menopause significantly reduced progression of lipid deposition in the carotid artery wall.
Study details: A secondary analysis of 643 women who participated in the Early Versus Late Intervention Trial With Estradiol.
