Western diet linked to lower microbiome diversity

Key clinical point: A Western diet correlated with a significantly less diverse gut microbiome.

Major finding: Chief culprits included fried foods, sodas, fatty sweets, processed meats, ready-cooked meals, and desserts (P less than .05 for each association). Fresh fruit and fish showed the opposite association.

Study details: Analysis of food questionnaires and 16S rRNA sequencing of stool samples from 1,000 healthy adults from the Milieu Intérior Study.
