Klotho allele lowers APOE4-associated risk of Alzheimer’s
Key clinical point: The klotho genotype known as KL-VS had a protective effect against development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in cognitively normal older adult carriers of the APOE4 allele.
Major finding: The presence of the APOE4 allele and heterozygosity for KL-VS significantly reduced risk for developing AD (odds ratio, 0.75) among cognitively normal individuals aged 60-80 years.
Study details: The data come from a case-control study of 22 cohorts including more than 20,000 individuals aged 60-80 years.
Disclosures: The study was supported by the Iqbal Farrukh & Asad Jamal Center for Cognitive Health in Aging, The South Palm Beach County Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. The researchers had no financial conflicts to disclose.
