CRC Screening at US Community Health Centers

Cancer; ePub 2017 Jul 14; Lin, McKinley, et al

The colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rate for patients seen at community health centers was fairly similar to overall screening rates, according to a study involving data from the 2014 Health Center Patient Survey. Still, certain disparities exist.

Investigators looked at the link between sociodemographic variables and patient-provider communication regarding CRC screening of participants at community health centers. Among the results:

  • The screening rate among patients seen at community health centers was 58%.
  • This compares to 58% according to the 2013 National Health Interview Survey, and 65% seen in the 2012 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System.
  • Patients between the ages of 65 and 75 years and those not in the labor force were ~2.5 times more likely to receive CRC screening.
  • Patients who were uninsured were 67% less likely to be screened.
  • Non-English-speaking patients were 58% less likely to be screened
  • There was no link between patient-provider communication and receipt of CRC screening.
