Risk Information in CRC Testing
Evaluating use of tablet-based patient education
A tablet-based questionnaire about risk can significantly improve participation in colorectal cancer (CRC) testing, according to a study evaluating the use of Cancer Risk Intake System (CRIS) that asks patients questions about risk prior to appointments and generates tailored printouts for patients and physicians. Researchers found:
• Participation in any CRC testing was three times higher for those who used the CRIS and received any printed materials, compared to no-contact controls (47% vs 16%).
• Among CRIS users ages 50 and older, participation in any CRC testing was higher in a group receiving tailored printouts matching risk factors with guideline-based recommendations (53% vs 44%).
