Age and Incidence in Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

Studying geographic differences

Population-based estimates suggest that the median age at diagnosis and incidence of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) varies by region, according to a study of 33,690 patients diagnosed with CML. Researchers found:

• 57.2% of CML patients were male.

• Median age at diagnosis was lowest in Africa and Asia (47 years) and highest in Oceania (72 years).

• Age-standardized incidence rates were lowest in African males (0.61 per 100,000) and Asian females (0.55 per 100,000) and highest in Oceania males and females (1.78 and 0.96 per 100,000, respectively).

• No significant differences were seen by region in the < 50 years age group.

• There are significant differences by region in the > 50 years age group.
