Cancer Survivors’ Information Needs

What do they want to know, and when?

Cancer survivors’ information needs vary over time and according to cancer type, according to 3 annual surveys of 2,013 Pennsylvania cancer survivors diagnosed with colon, breast, or prostate cancer. Researchers report that:

• Reducing risk of recurrence was the most frequent topic across survivors and time
• In the first year of surveys, breast cancer survivors were the most likely to seek information about survivorship
• Information seeking generally declined over time, but with cancer-specific patterns:

• The decline was steepest for breast cancer survivors

• In later surveys, colon cancer survivors sought more information, especially about reducing cancer risks for other family members
